Blackbird is a flight of fancy

REVIEW: As openings go there can be few more impressive than Blackbird which continues at Lincoln's new LPAC venue until Saturday.
Blackbird is the University-based Performing Arts Centre's inaugural drama production, setting the benchmark at a dizzying height and showcasing the kind of excellence for which the centre strives.

Within seconds of a startling opening it was plain to see why this show, written by David Harrower and directed in this incarnation by David Grindley - but previously with Cate Blanchett at the helm - is such an award winning success, taking the Laurence Olivier Award in 2007 as best new play.

It is the talk of the town and one not to be missed - continuing nightly up to April 12 at 7.30pm with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm.

Superlatives such as phenomenal and brilliant do not do justice to the spare, pared down punch-packing, sharp writing or the spell-binding, engaging and emotionally-rich acting of Robert Daws (known in a myriad of roles including The Royal) and Dawn Steele (Lexie from Monarch of the Glen).

It is a harrowing 100-minute roller-coaster that darts off in the most unexpected directions as two characters with a shared past collide 15 years on.

The story cannot be told here; you have to experience it to believe it, but be warned - it is potent and provocative; it is highly charged and will leave you squirming with your own prejudices.

The director's notes detail Blackbird as a psychologically and physically bruising emotional journey that translates into an unforgettable experience for the audience, It is that and so much more. It is intense, extraordinary and unmissable.
