Wild at Heart star says "midges" are worse than poisonous snakes 09/02/2009 Wild at Heart star Dawn Steele has claimed that the Scottish midge is more dangerous than poisonous snakes, giant spiders or a charging elephant. The 33-year-old told the Daily Record that she felt very lucky to have won a role on the stv drama, which is filmed in South Africa. The Glasgow-born actress said that she didn't mind the early 5.30am starts to filming for the show and was not particularly worried about being surrounded by wild animals. She said: "As for problems with wildlife, I'd say the problem with midges in Scotland is far worse. Dawn, who plays Alice Collins, revealed that she won the role despite serious competition for the part from some famous actresses. She said: "I looked at some of the names who were going along to audition and knew I had no chance. "There were some really famous females in contention. "But I never allowed myself to think I could land the part. It meant so much to me. Dawn was keen to land the role as it gave her a chance to revisit Africa. She explained: "I'd once lived in Africa. We emigrated there when I was a kid, but came back home again after a short time." Dawn is hopeful that TV bosses will re-commission the show. She added: "I'd love to go back. It's another chance to live the dream."
